Former Newcastle United winger Nolberto Solano has taken a surprising step in his coaching career by being appointed manager of the Pakistan U23 national team. The role includes a progression plan toward taking over the senior side.
Solano, 50, joined Newcastle in 1998 from Boca Juniors, where he had impressed none other than Diego Maradona, who reportedly nicknamed him “the Little Maestro.” Solano went on to make 315 appearances across two spells at St James’ Park, becoming a fan favourite.
Pakistan, currently ranked 201st in the FIFA World Rankings, has never qualified for a major tournament. Solano brings experience from previous roles with Universitario, Jose Galvez FBC, AFC Eskilstuna, Blyth Spartans, and as part of Peru’s coaching staff during the 2018 World Cup.
