Cambridge United have pulled off a midfield masterstroke with the signing of Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, the man who made football history by going from non-league to the Premier League with the same club. Now, he’s bringing that fairy-tale experience to the Abbey.
The 31-year-old joins the U’s on a two-year deal after an epic 11-year stint at Luton Town, where he clocked up over 400 appearances and earned legendary status.
From Boreham Wood to the Big Time
Mpanzu’s journey began in the youth ranks at Boreham Wood before a move to West Ham United in 2011. After a taste of top-tier life with the Hammers, a loan switch to Luton Town would change everything.
The loan quickly became permanent, and the rest was Hatters history: four promotions, 412 appearances, and a ticket to the Premier League. Mpanzu played 27 times in the top flight just two seasons ago—proving he’s still got plenty in the tank.
“Right project, right time”
Speaking about the move, Mpanzu said:
“Cambridge reached out about two weeks ago and explained the project they’re building. I wanted to make sure it was the right next step for me—and it felt right straight away.
“It’s something new. New club, new faces, new energy. I’m buzzing to be here and I can’t wait to play my football in front of the Cambridge fans.”
Harris: “He’s a serial winner”
Head Coach Neil Harris was full of praise for his newest recruit, calling him a proven winner who fits the club’s ambitions perfectly.
“Pelly’s a huge signing for us. He’s climbed every level of the football ladder, and done it the hard way. He knows what it takes to win, and that’s exactly what we want in this squad.
“He’s not just a strong, combative midfielder—he’s a great character and someone who leads by example on and off the pitch.”
🛒 Signing #7 of the Summer
Mpanzu becomes Cambridge United’s seventh signing of a busy summer transfer window as the club builds to gain promotion back to League One.
