James Trafford is coming home – and not just for a cuppa.
The 22-year-old goalkeeper has completed a £27 million move (plus add-ons) back to Manchester City from Burnley, with Pep Guardiola’s side triggering their buy-back clause after fending off a £27m swoop from Newcastle. Trafford, a City academy graduate, said it best himself:
“This is the place I call home.”
And home is where the clean sheets are. Trafford was nothing short of sensational last season under Scott Parker, racking up an absurd 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship games, earning himself a spot in the division’s Team of the Year, and becoming a cult hero at Turf Moor in the process.
But when City came calling, Trafford didn’t hesitate to pack his gloves.
Five-Year Deal, Number One Shirt, Big Ambitions
Trafford returns to the Etihad on a five-year deal with an option for a sixth, and he won’t be lurking in the shadows — the number one shirt is his.
“Rejoining City is such a special and proud moment both for me and my family,” said Trafford, sounding like a man who just rediscovered his boyhood club’s Wi-Fi password.
“I always dreamed of coming back. I’m still young, still hungry, and there’s no better place to grow than Manchester City.”
The Gloves Are Off – Trafford to Challenge Ederson
City now have a crowded keeper’s union: Ederson, Stefan Ortega, Marcus Bettinelli, and now James Trafford. With Ederson in the final year of his deal and linked (loosely) with Galatasaray, Trafford’s return has sparked speculation that the winds of change are blowing between the sticks.
Director of Football Hugo Viana was full of praise:
“James is already one of the most accomplished young goalkeepers in the English game. We believe he has everything it takes to become a top keeper for both City and England.”
From Accrington to the Etihad – The Trafford Journey
Signed to City’s academy in 2015, Trafford never made a senior appearance in sky blue, instead gaining valuable experience at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before his breakout with Burnley, where he clocked 73 appearances, including 28 in the Premier League last season.
He also stood tall on the international stage, playing from England U17s to U21s, including that perfect, zero-conceded run during their 2023 U21 Euros title win. He earned his first senior call-up in 2024, and now looks set to push for a debut with both club and country.
City’s Summer Spending Spree Continues
Trafford becomes Manchester City’s sixth summer signing, joining:
- Tijjani Reijnders (£46.5m)
- Rayan Cherki (£30.5m)
- Sverre Nypan (£12.5m)
- Rayan Ait-Nouri (£31m)
- Marcus Bettinelli (nominal fee)
With depth across the pitch and competition heating up in goal, City are building a squad designed for domination — again.
