Luton Town kicked off the new EFL season with a narrow 1-0 victory, courtesy of a late own goal by AFC Wimbledon’s Ryan Johnson.
In a match that offered few clear-cut chances, it was a moment of misfortune that ultimately separated the sides. The Hatters’ best effort from open play came when right-back Reuell Walters unleashed a powerful strike from distance, forcing a sharp save from new Dons goalkeeper Nathan Bishop.
With time winding down, Luton’s pressure finally paid off. Nahki Wells delivered a teasing cross into the box, aiming for Cauley Woodrow. Attempting to intercept, Johnson mistimed his clearance, accidentally diverting the ball past Bishop and into his own net.
While the contest won’t be remembered for its excitement, Luton will be satisfied to claim their first three points of the campaign. The result gives Hatters fans a modest boost of optimism as the EFL season begins.
