Matchday Fever

Wigan Athletic have officially welcomed Liverpool’s rising defensive talent Isaac Mabaya on a season-long loan, pending the usual Premier League, EFL, and FA formalities. The 20-year-old becomes Ryan Lowe’s seventh summer signing, as the Latics continue to bolster their squad ahead of the 2025/26 League One campaign.

Born in Preston and bred in the Reds’ academy, Mabaya joined Liverpool at the age of just six and quickly stood out as one to watch. He broke into the U18s at only 16, dazzled during the 2022/23 pre-season with Jürgen Klopp’s first team, and even featured on Liverpool’s Asia tour, showcasing his versatility and raw athleticism.

In 2023, he signed his first professional contract, and after a strong season in Liverpool’s senior academy setup, Mabaya earned a place on the bench in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven. He later made his senior debut in the FA Cup against Plymouth Argyle under new boss Arne Slot in early 2025.

Now, he’s set to taste his first full season of senior football in the rough and ready world of League One – and Latics fans can expect fireworks down the right flank.

Mabaya: “I’m buzzing to get started!”

Speaking to Wigan’s media team, Mabaya said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to be here. I’ve had some great conversations with the Gaffer – I love his footballing philosophy and think it’s the perfect environment for me to grow.

Wigan’s fanbase is massive, and I’ve heard all about the atmosphere at the Brick Community Stadium – I can’t wait to play in front of the supporters and give it my all.”

Ryan Lowe: “We’ve tracked him for years”

Head Coach Ryan Lowe was full of praise for his new recruit:

“Isaac’s a player I’ve followed for a long time – I even tried to sign him while at Preston. He’s powerful, quick, and technically sharp – a modern-day right wing-back who fits our system perfectly.

We saw what he could do firsthand when he played against us with Liverpool U21s. He’s fit, hungry, and excited to prove himself – we’re thrilled to have him.”

Sporting Director Gregor Rioch added:

“Isaac fits the mould of what we were looking for at wing-back. He’s an exciting, talented player who’s ready to make the leap into senior football.

We’re proud to continue our strong relationship with Liverpool, and confident Isaac will thrive in Wigan colours.”
