Rochdale AFC have officially retired their iconic number 15 shirt in a heartfelt tribute to Joe Thompson, the former midfielder who passed away in April at the age of 36 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Thompson, who was first diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013 and again in 2017, defied the odds multiple times before his third diagnosis in 2023. Despite immense personal challenges, he became a beacon of inspiration throughout English football.
A Dale Icon On and Off the Pitch
Across three separate spells at the club, Thompson made 203 appearances for the Greater Manchester side, becoming a fan favourite for his performances and perseverance. The club noted that Thompson had become “synonymous with the number 15” during his time at Spotland Stadium.
“The retirement of Joe’s former squad number is recognition of his impact, not just as a talented football player, but as an incredible person who had a positive impact on everyone who has been touched by his story,” Rochdale said in a statement.
From Manchester United Trainee to Dale Hero
A product of Manchester United’s academy, Thompson built his legacy at Rochdale, not only with his footballing talent but through his resilience. One of his most iconic moments came in 2018 when he scored the crucial goal that helped Rochdale avoid relegation from League One — just months after beating cancer for the second time.
He ultimately retired from professional football in 2019, stating he had “pushed his body to the absolute limit”.
Joe Thompson’s number 15 shirt may no longer grace the pitch — but his legacy, courage, and spirit will forever be stitched into the fabric of Rochdale AFC.
