Chelsea FC have officially confirmed the signing of highly-rated Dutch defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax, securing the 19-year-old on a long-term contract until 2032.
The Netherlands international becomes the latest addition to Enzo Maresca’s squad as the Blues continue to invest in elite young talent. Hato is expected to join up with his new teammates at Cobham this week to begin pre-season preparations.
“I’m very excited — I’m so happy to be here,” Hato said upon signing. “I thought a lot about my future and knew I was ready for the next step. Chelsea is the best place for me to take that step and develop further.”
A Rapid Rise at Ajax
Born in Rotterdam, Hato began his football career with Sparta Rotterdam before moving to Ajax’s famed youth academy in 2018. He signed his first professional contract in 2022 at just 16 years old and quickly emerged as one of the most promising defenders in the Eredivisie.
He made history by becoming the third-youngest player to debut for Ajax in the Dutch top flight, making his first appearance in February 2023 against Cambuur. By the end of that season, he was starting in the KNVB Cup Final, a clear sign of his maturity and technical quality.
During the 2023/24 campaign, Hato cemented his place in Ajax’s starting XI, operating primarily as a left-back, though he is equally capable as a central defender. His composure on the ball, ability to read the game, and confidence going forward made him a standout performer in a challenging season for the Amsterdam side.
Leadership Beyond His Years
Despite his youth, Hato captained Ajax on several occasions, showcasing leadership qualities well beyond his age. His versatility, intelligence in possession, and strength in one-on-one duels have already drawn comparisons to some of the Premier League’s best defenders.
A Rising Star on the International Stage
Hato’s rise has not gone unnoticed by the Netherlands national team, where he made his senior international debut at just 17 years old. He has since earned six caps and was handed the captain’s armband during the UEFA U21 European Championship this summer — further solidifying his reputation as one of Europe’s top young defensive talents.
Chelsea’s acquisition of Jorrel Hato reflects the club’s long-term vision to build around youth, skill, and leadership. With Premier League experience now on the horizon, all eyes will be on the young Dutchman as he begins his journey in English football.
