Burnley are set to bolster their midfield ahead of their Premier League return after reaching an agreement with Chelsea to sign 21-year-old Lesley Ugochukwu on a permanent transfer.
The France U23 international has been given permission to undergo a medical and finalize personal terms before completing a move to Turf Moor. Ugochukwu is expected to sign a four-year contract, providing a significant boost to new head coach Scott Parker’s midfield options — particularly in the No. 6 and No. 8 roles.
Burnley Reinforce Midfield After Josh Brownhill Exit
Ugochukwu’s arrival comes following the departure of Josh Brownhill, who tallied 18 goals in 44 appearances last season before leaving Burnley as a free agent this summer.
Burnley have been active in the summer transfer window, already adding 10 new first-team players. Notable signings include defenders Kyle Walker and Axel Tuanzebe, as well as attacking reinforcements Jacob Bruun Larsen, Loum Tchaouna, and Bashir Humphreys.
Ugochukwu Impresses During Southampton Loan
As first reported by The Athletic in the Transfer DealSheet on June 3, Chelsea anticipated strong interest in Ugochukwu after a promising loan spell with Southampton in the 2024-25 campaign.
Ugochukwu joined Southampton on loan in August 2024, just one year after signing a long-term deal with Chelsea. Despite Southampton’s relegation, the French midfielder featured in 31 matches across all competitions, contributing three goals and assists. He became a key figure late in the season, starting the final 11 Premier League games and scoring a dramatic 93rd-minute equalizer against West Ham in April.
From Rennes to Premier League Regular
Ugochukwu made his senior debut for Rennes shortly after turning 17, becoming one of the youngest players in the club’s history. He moved to Chelsea in 2023 and made 15 appearances during his debut Premier League season before heading out on loan.
Internationally, Ugochukwu has represented France at youth level 27 times and remains a regular with the U23 squad.
