Former assistant coach Chris Powell has issued a heartfelt message to Sheffield Wednesday following his departure from Hillsborough, expressing deep gratitude to the club, its players, and most poignantly, the fans.
Powell, who joined Danny Röhl’s coaching staff during the German’s tenure at the club, quickly became a popular figure among the Wednesday faithful. However, following Röhl’s exit earlier this summer, it was confirmed that Powell would also be moving on, with newly appointed boss Henrik Pedersen assembling his own backroom team.
“Once a Wednesdayite, Always a Wednesdayite”
Taking to social media, Powell reflected warmly on his time in South Yorkshire, praising the spirit, resilience, and unity shown by all involved — even in the face of uncertainty.
“Following my departure from my role as assistant coach at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you,” Powell began.
“Firstly, to the players and staff I was privileged to work with. We all experienced challenges and difficulties, on and off the field, but we can all be proud of the way we worked together — first to retain the club’s Championship status, and then to achieve a solid mid-table finish.”
He acknowledged the off-pitch struggles the club endured, notably issues surrounding delayed wages, and offered heartfelt support to those still affected.
“The trauma of not knowing when you’ll be paid, and the effect that has on your loved ones, can never be underestimated. You all conducted yourselves with remarkable professionalism throughout.”
Gratitude to Danny Röhl and the Supporters
Powell also took time to commend former head coach Danny Röhl, under whom he served, calling him a “bright talent with a huge future in the game.”
But it was his words for the fans that resonated most deeply.
“To the Wednesday supporters — I was welcomed from day one, and greeted with warmth, love, and genuine friendship. I knew the club was special, but I didn’t realise just how much it would mean to me personally.”
“Whilst I have departed in less than ideal circumstances, I take with me many moments and memories that will never be erased. I’m genuinely sorry we didn’t get the chance to finish what we started, but I’m sure our paths will cross again.”
“Thank you, from me and my family, to you and yours. Once a Wednesdayite, always a Wednesdayite. WAWAW.”
End of an Era at Hillsborough
Powell’s exit marks the end of a coaching chapter that also saw Sascha Lense, Neil Thompson, and Sal Bibbo leave the club. Bibbo has since joined Rangers as a goalkeeping coach.
