Matchday Fever

Tottenham Hotspur have officially confirmed the permanent transfer of Son Heung-min to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Los Angeles FC (LAFC) in what is now the most expensive transfer in MLS history.

LAFC paid a record-breaking $26 million (£19.5 million) to secure the services of the South Korean star, surpassing the previous league record set by Atlanta United’s signing of Emmanuel Latte Lath earlier this year.

Son Leaves Spurs After a Decade of Iconic Moments

The 33-year-old forward announced his departure from Spurs during a news conference on Saturday, marking the end of a remarkable 10-year career at Tottenham.

Son was spotted at LAFC’s 2-1 Leagues Cup victory over Tigres UANL on Tuesday, and the deal was finalized following the completion of his medical and paperwork earlier this week.

His final appearance in a Tottenham shirt came last Sunday in a 1-1 pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in his hometown of Seoul, South Korea.

A Record-Breaking Move to the United States

The $26 million fee makes Son Heung-min the most expensive player in MLS history, highlighting LAFC’s ambition to compete at the highest level both domestically and internationally.

Currently sixth in the Western Conference, LAFC will be looking to Son for goals, leadership, and experience as they push for playoff success. He’ll also reunite with former Spurs teammate and club captain Hugo Lloris, who joined the California-based side earlier in the season.

Son’s Legacy at Tottenham

Son joined Tottenham Hotspur from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, going on to become one of the most iconic players in the club’s modern history. Over a decade in North London, he made 454 appearances, scoring 173 goals and earning a reputation as one of the Premier League’s top forwards.

He captained Tottenham to Europa League glory in May, helping Spurs lift their first trophy in 17 years with a memorable win over Manchester United in the final.

Daniel Levy Pays Tribute to a Spurs Legend

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy praised Son’s contribution to the club in an emotional farewell message:

“Sonny is one of the greatest players to ever wear the famous Lilywhite shirt and he has been a joy to watch over the past decade.

Not only is he a wonderfully gifted footballer, but he’s also an incredible human being who has touched hearts and inspired people throughout the club and all over the world.

Sonny has given so much to this club, both on and off the pitch, and for that we are forever grateful.

We wish him all the best for the future, and he will always be welcome back at the club as a beloved and cherished member of our Spurs family.”
