Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is set to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal after the clubs reached an agreement on a €53 million (£46.3m) transfer fee.

The 26-year-old Uruguay international is now expected to undergo a medical ahead of the move, which would bring an end to his two-year spell at Anfield. Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in June 2022 for an initial fee of £64 million but struggled to cement a consistent starting role.

Despite scoring 40 goals in 143 appearances, Nunez started just eight Premier League games during last season’s title-winning campaign under Arne Slot. He found the net only seven times in all competitions last term, although his pre-season form has impressed, including a 20-minute hat-trick against Stoke City in July.

With the sale, Liverpool will receive a financial boost in their efforts to sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, having already had a £110 million bid rejected. The Magpies reportedly value the Swedish forward at around £150 million, making any deal one of the most expensive in Premier League history.

Nunez had also attracted interest from clubs including Napoli and other top European sides, while Al-Nassr reportedly made a €70m offer back in January, which Liverpool turned down at the time.

The move to Al-Hilal, managed by former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, comes as the Saudi side looks to strengthen ahead of the new season after finishing second in the league.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have been active in the transfer market, already spending over £250 million this summer. Major signings include Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record £116m and Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £79m deal.

Letting Nunez go not only frees up space in the squad but could prove crucial in finalizing the club’s high-profile pursuit of Isak — a player seen as the ideal fit for Liverpool’s evolving front line.
