Matchday Fever

Oli McBurnie scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal Hull City’s first Championship victory of the season, edging Oxford United 3-2 in a pulsating clash at the MKM Stadium.

The game burst into life within two minutes when Joe Gelhardt fired the Tigers ahead after being set up by McBurnie. But Oxford responded almost instantly as on-loan Tottenham striker Will Lankshear volleyed home his first senior league goal to make it 1-1.

Hull regained the lead through Matt Crooks, who finished coolly from another McBurnie assist, only for Cameron Brannagan to level again with a thunderous volley in the 26th minute. Both sides were guilty of poor defending in an end-to-end opening half.

The second half was dominated by Hull, who enjoyed nearly 75% possession, but clear chances were scarce as Oxford defended deep. Just when it looked like the points would be shared, McBurnie struck decisively in the 93rd minute, controlling Ryan Giles’ pass inside the box before slotting calmly past goalkeeper Jamie Cumming.

The Scotland international, making his full league debut for Hull after joining from Las Palmas in the summer, played a hand in all three goals—assisting twice before netting his first league goal for the club in dramatic fashion.

The result gives Hull City their first win of the Championship campaign, while Oxford United are left to rue missed chances and lapses in concentration at the back.
