Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea on a five-year contract, securing the highly-rated England youth international midfielder on a permanent basis.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund, impressing in the Bundesliga, and now joins in a transfer worth around £24 million.
Chukwuemeka’s Career So Far
Chukwuemeka first moved to Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022 in a deal worth £20 million. He went on to make 32 appearances for the Blues before being loaned out to Germany last season, where he showcased his potential in Dortmund’s midfield.
His permanent switch makes him one of Dortmund’s most exciting young signings, as the club continues its tradition of developing top English talent.
Aaron Anselmino Also Joins on Loan
Alongside the Chukwuemeka deal, Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino has agreed to join Dortmund on a season-long loan, having already traveled to Germany to finalize the move.
Chelsea’s Transfer Balancing Act
Chukwuemeka’s departure pushes Chelsea’s summer sales income past £270m, nearly balancing the £277m they’ve spent on new signings.
This is particularly significant given UEFA’s financial regulations, which require the club to record a positive transfer balance this window in order to register their new arrivals for the Champions League.
Earlier this year, Chelsea were fined £26.7m for breaching UEFA’s financial sustainability rules, with the club’s squad cost ratio — the proportion of revenue spent on wages — rising above 80%.
More Transfer Activity Expected at Chelsea
With the transfer deadline approaching, several Chelsea players continue to be linked with exits, including Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling, Tyrique George, and Ben Chilwell.
At the same time, Chelsea could still strengthen, with potential interest in Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons.
