Former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has left Besiktas after reaching a mutual agreement to terminate his contract with the Turkish club.
The 32-year-old England international, who joined Besiktas on a free transfer in August 2023 after leaving Liverpool, still had a year remaining on his deal. However, both parties agreed to end the contract early, with the club confirming that Oxlade-Chamberlain will receive €1.75m (£1.5m) in compensation.
Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Time in Turkey
During his stint in Istanbul, Oxlade-Chamberlain made 50 appearances, scoring five goals, and played a key role in helping Besiktas lift the Turkish Cup in 2024.
The midfielder was signed during a rebuild under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who took charge of the club earlier this year.
Career Highlights and Injury Struggles
Oxlade-Chamberlain began his career at Southampton before moving to Arsenal, where he developed into one of England’s brightest young midfielders.
In 2017, he made a £35m move to Liverpool, going on to make 146 appearances and score 18 goals. He was part of the team that won the Premier League title in 2020 and also played in Liverpool’s Champions League-winning campaign in 2019, although his involvement was limited by injuries.
Long-term knee injuries hindered his progress at Anfield, and he last featured for England in 2019, finishing with 35 caps for his country.
What’s Next for Oxlade-Chamberlain?
Now a free agent, the experienced midfielder faces a decision on the next step in his career. With his pedigree at the highest level in both the Premier League and Europe, he could attract interest from clubs looking for creativity and depth in midfield.
