Matchday Fever

Sutton United have confirmed that head coach Steve Morison has left the club by mutual consent, with the team currently sitting 22nd in the National League table.

The decision comes after a difficult start to the 2024/25 campaign, where Sutton have managed just one win in nine league games. Morison’s final match in charge was a 3-2 home defeat against Tamworth.

Morison’s Time at Sutton United

The 42-year-old former Cardiff City boss was appointed in January 2024, taking over with Sutton rooted to the bottom of League Two. Despite an improved run that saw the club fight until the final day, Sutton were ultimately relegated to non-league football.

In his first full season, Morison guided Sutton to a respectable 12th-place finish, just eight points outside the play-offs. However, this season’s poor form has left them with only five points from nine games, including one victory against Carlisle United and two draws. Defensively, Sutton have struggled, conceding 20 goals – the second-worst record in the division.

Club Statement on Morison’s Departure

In an official statement, Sutton United praised Morison’s impact:

“The club wishes to place on record its thanks to Steve for his service during his 21-month spell at Gander Green Lane. His energy, passion and dedication have been infectious to all, and his tireless work off the pitch in helping reshape the club as a more professional organisation has been invaluable.”

Interim Manager and What’s Next

First-team coach Jon Meeney will step in as interim head coach while the club searches for Morison’s successor. Sutton’s next fixture is a tough away trip to Brackley Town on 20 September.

Sutton become the fourth National League club to change manager this season, following Morecambe, Yeovil Town, and York City.
