Matchday Fever

It was a memorable night for English football at the Ballon d’Or 2025 ceremony in Paris, as England manager Sarina Wiegman was crowned Women’s Coach of the Year while Hannah Hampton scooped the prestigious Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper.

The double success comes after the Lionesses’ dramatic Euro 2025 triumph in Switzerland, where England defeated Spain 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Chelsea goalkeeper Hampton, 24, was the hero of the shootout, saving two Spanish penalties to secure England’s second European crown under Wiegman.

For Wiegman, 55, this marks her second European Championship win with England, having first guided the Lionesses to glory on home soil in Euro 2021. She beat out strong competition for the coaching award, including Chelsea’s Sonia Bompastor and Arsenal’s Renee Slegers.

Hampton, meanwhile, claimed the Yashin Trophy ahead of top names such as Arsenal’s Daphne van Domselaar and former Chelsea shot-stopper Ann-Katrin Berger, further cementing her reputation as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

Elsewhere, England striker Michelle Agyemang, who played a key role with goals in the Euro 2025 quarter-final against Sweden and semi-final versus Italy, was nominated for the Kopa Trophy. The award for best young player, however, went to 19-year-old Barcelona and Spain winger Vicky Lopez.

The success of Wiegman and Hampton highlights the Lionesses’ growing dominance in women’s football, with England once again taking centre stage on the global stage.
