Matchday Fever

The Championship fixture between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town will be replayed in full after Saturday’s match at Ewood Park was abandoned due to heavy rainfall.

The game was halted in the 79th minute, with Rovers leading 1-0 thanks to a Todd Cantwell penalty, but the referee deemed the pitch unplayable as torrential rain waterlogged the surface.

While Cantwell’s goal will no longer count when the match is replayed, Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves—who was shown a red card during the abandoned game—will still be required to serve his suspension.

In an official statement, the EFL confirmed the outcome following a board meeting:

“The decision follows recent precedents relating to abandoned fixtures and is intended to uphold the integrity of the league competition, which should, wherever possible, be based on a complete set of fixtures played to a conclusion on the day.”

The EFL added that the choice to replay the match was made “by a majority,” with three Championship directors abstaining from the vote. The governing body also pledged to work with clubs to develop clearer guidance for dealing with future abandonments.

A new date for the Blackburn vs Ipswich replay will be announced by both clubs in due course.
