Matchday Fever

Chichester City FC have confirmed the tragic death of striker Billy Vigar, a former Arsenal academy graduate, after he sustained a serious brain injury during a match. He was just 21 years old.

The forward, from Worthing, suffered the injury while playing for Chichester City against Wingate & Finchley in the Isthmian League Premier Division on Saturday. It is believed the incident occurred when Vigar collided with a concrete wall near the pitch, although the club has not formally confirmed the cause.

Vigar’s family released a heartfelt statement on Thursday:

“After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy was put into an induced coma. On Tuesday, he required an operation to aid his chances of recovery. Although this helped, the injury proved too much, and he passed away on Thursday morning.

We are devastated that this has happened while he was playing the sport he loved.”

Tributes have poured in across the football community.

  • Derby County, where Vigar spent time on loan with the U21s during the 2022–23 season, said: “All at Derby County are deeply saddened by the passing of Billy Vigar. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
  • Hastings United, one of Vigar’s former clubs, also paid tribute: “We will always remember Billy’s time at Hastings United with fondness. Our thoughts are with Billy’s family and friends at this time.”
  • The FA released a statement saying: “We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, loved ones, and everyone at Chichester City FC.”

Vigar, who came through the Arsenal academy, also had spells with Derby County, Hastings United, and Eastbourne Borough, and was widely admired for his talent and character.

His passing leaves a deep void in the non-league and wider football community, with many remembering him not only as a gifted striker but also as a much-loved teammate and friend.
